Further Information

Having been orphaned at a young age, Sadi studied in Baghdad and met Suhrawardi, one of the leading Sufi figures of the time. Due to the Mongol threat, he fled Baghdad and traveled to central Asia, India, Yemen, and Ethiopia through Mecca. The Franks captured Sadi in Syria and forced him to work hard until he could be ransomed. Before returning to his native Shiraz in 1256, he traveled to North Africa and Anatolia. Furthermore, Sadi is a prolific writer of Qasidas (long panegyrics) in Persian and Arabic, mystic Ghazals, and satirical poems. Shiraz is home to a shrine dedicated to his memory.
